Community at Wilberforce House Museum

We want to create space for the local community at Wilberforce House Museum.

From co-curating exhibitions to finding new friends, we have several groups and activities for you to explore

Changing perspective

Hull Museums work closely with members of the Wilberforce House Museum Advisory Board, which is comprised of local people of colour and members of the Black community. They bring their extensive and varied knowledge, experience and understanding to our work at Wilberforce House Museum, offering new perspectives on the subjects we cover and helping us to adapt our galleries accordingly. This includes developing our gallery that looks at the legacies of transatlantic slavery, with the help of funding from Arts Council England.

Age UK Museums Group

Join our social drop-in for over 55s, every Tuesday at the Wilberforce House Learning Centre. Meet like minded people, listen to music or take a trip around the Museums Quarter. We also have games, quizzes and refreshments.

Hull Museums Art Group

Hull Museums Art Group meets every Monday afternoon at Wilberforce House Museum.

The group has been running for over 10 years. It began as part of a funded adult learning project at the Ferens Art Gallery. When funding ended, members took it upon themselves to find a way to continue. Now everyone pays a small fee of £4 per session to cover the running costs. Meanwhile, we support the group by providing an accessible workshop space and administration.

Each week, members bring their own projects and follow their creative interests. At the same time, advice and guidance is always on hand from local artist Bill Brown. Bill has been running the group since it began. It's now grown into a supportive and friendly community of enthusiastic creative people.

Places are limited to keep the group small and friendly, and work on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’re interested in joining the group, we may add you to a waiting list if places aren't currently available.
