Spend a day immersed in clay at the Ferens Art Gallery as you create a beautiful stoneware vase from start to finish. Guided by an expert ceramicist, you’ll learn the traditional coil building method, shaping your vessel into a smooth, refined form.

With your vase complete, you’ll move on to surface decoration, experimenting with coloured slip and the striking sgraffito technique. This centuries old method involves scratching through a layer of slip to reveal the contrasting clay beneath, allowing you to carve intricate patterns and personal designs into your piece.

After the workshop, your vase will be professionally fired and ready to collect from the Ferens front desk between 8–22 April during opening hours. Please note that any uncollected work will be discarded after this period.

Everything is provided just bring your imagination. All materials, tools, and resources are included.

The workshop takes place 10:15am – 3 pm. There will be a break for lunch, giving you time to recharge and connect with fellow makers.

A perfect opportunity to slow down, get hands on and create something truly unique.
