Our collections include many objects relating to slavery and the campaign for abolition. We also hold West African cultural items linked to the homes and memories of enslaved people.

It's a difficult but important collection. One that shines a light on stories from the transatlantic slave trade.

From slavery to abolition

Our collections take you on a journey from the origins of slavery to the eventual Parliamentary campaign for abolition. Exhibitions explore the transportation of slaves in the transatlantic slave trade. As well as their life on the plantations – including stories of rebellion and revolt.

The strength of our collection lies in plantation records and anti-slavery material. We also hold slavery auction posters, sales receipts and items used to imprison and brand enslaved Africans.

Through the collection, we also explore contemporary forms of slavery and human rights.
